How to Hide a Well Cover In Your Yard (Decorative)

Do you have an old wellspring in your yard and are looking for ways to conceal it? Then you are in the right place. We have prepared for you some creative ideas of hiding a well casing.

Recommended casing are those that are raised by at least 12 inches from the ground. The area above the grounds shields the well from contaminants like debris and dust particles.

Remember, one of the cover’s primary purposes is to ensure that the water is free from impurities. Hiding a well cover may seem like an easy undertaking, but that is not the case. It is quite a challenging task. While you are concealing a well cover, you need to make sure that the waterhole casing is highly accessible without compromising on the visual appeal.

Leaving the borehole casing open is very dangerous; your dog could fall inside, worst case scenario your little ones may be playing, and accidentally fall inside. Therefore, it would be smart to ensure that you hide the well cover and draw attention away from it.

The method you decide to use should always allow easy access to the well when necessary and guarantee the water’s safety. Here are some of the ways you can hide your fountainhead cover

Planting cover

This is the obvious and most common method used by many people. Planting vegetation cover around the wellspring casing is quite clever and cost-effective. You need to keep in mind if you use this method to leave an allowance of one foot around the cover.

This is crucial as it gives room to access the well when there is a need. I would be wise to plant grasses that grow several feet tall so that well casing could be covered entirely. Try planting grasses like Chinese silver grass, feather reed grass, and Switchgrass just to mention a few.

Also, you could plant a flower garden in a raised bed. The raised bed adds height around the well, thus hiding the fountainhead cap. Whatever the vegetation cover you decide to plant, ensure that the surrounding landscape is sloping away from the well cover.

The cover needs to be a bit raised than the surroundings for apparent reasons to prevent surface runoff, which could be contaminated from entering the well.

Garden structure

Another ingenious method of cloaking a wellspring cap is by constructing a yard structure where the well is located. There are many options you can choose from; the most commonly used structure is the wishing wells.

You also need to figure out the type of wishing well you will be using since they are plenty. The material available to you will determine the type of wishing well you will construct, including brick, wishing well, stone wishing well, or cedar wishing well.

Many people love this method because it has an old fashion appeal and is easy to construct. Also, you can easily customize its design to look as you please. You can purchase these at the nearest home improvement store, but they are pricey.

Alternatively, you can create a wishing well yourself from up-cycled materials like tires; this will save you a lot of money. Besides, the structure that you build will always be more satisfying than the one bought.

While you are building your structure, make sure that it rhymes with the surroundings, you don’t want something that will make your yard look odd and unappealing. Painting your structure with the right colors may help it to fit in the neighboring environment.

Positioning Techniques

The idea here is to draw away attention from the well capping. You can do this by using the items that are in your yard. Re-arrange the items so that it would be more conspicuous than the cover you are trying to conceal.

One smart way of doing this is by placing a seating area somewhat away from the well cover, and near the house, this will deflect the attention of people from the well. At a glance, all they will see is the seating area.

Fence

This is probably the safest way to hide the waterhole cap, although it may not be visually appealing like other techniques.  If you decide to go with this method, make are that you abide by the stipulated rules in your state.

Also, remember to give room for access when building your fence. A scenario may arise where you need to repair or do maintenance to the well. You could raise your fence a few feet above the ground.

On the other hand, if you decide to construct a higher fence, ensure that you also make a small gate that will allow you to access the well.  You can also decide to make a movable fence with a concrete base; this will enable you to move the fence aside whenever you need to access the well.

If you want to spice up your concealing method, you can plant flowers like campanula on the base, which will meander and grow around the fence, cloaking the well cap and increasing the visual appeal of your yard.

Potted Plants

Another trick you can use to conceal unpleasant well cover is by use of vase plants, which may include flowers or shrubs. One advantage of using this method is that it allows you to move the vase aside and access the well conveniently.

Also, you can make your potted plants using readily available materials in your home. You cut a tin horizontal wise with the base, place some soil inside and plant your favorite flower, and place on top of the well casing. This makes it a cheap endeavor.

You can use several small potted until they cover the well cap, or you can use one large vase plant that covers the entire well. This will work well if the potted plant’s diameter is slightly larger than the diameter of the well casing.

In both cases, it would be better if the casing is ground flat to maintain the even slope of your yard. Fake stones will also do the same trick as potted plants. You can get one at the relevant store near you. Fakes stones are hallowed, and all you have to do is to place it over the well cover.

Things You Should Never Do When Hiding a Well Cover

While every idea to cover up a well casing may seem like an excellent solution, some may result in more damage than good. You have to carefully evaluate each method and consider all the precautions for your safety. Here are some of the things you should avoid.

Avoid using chemicals

Never use chemicals like fertilizer and herbicides in areas around the well cover. It is important to note that these chemicals contain hazardous substances that can lead to poisoning when in contact with water.

If there are weeds in the vicinity, it would be smart to use organic herbicides; at all, you can’t uproot the unwanted vegetation cover. Also, if you want to apply fertilizer, it is best to use an organic one.

The chemicals applied to the vegetation near the well cover will get absorbed into the soil; after that, it will contaminate the water.

Don’t Bury the Well Casing

Many people innocently make this mistake of covering their borehole with soil simply because it is simple when looking for well cover ideas. The consequences of doing this practice are many and severe. For example, you will always have a hard time accessing the cover when you need to repair or do some maintenance.

Another danger of covering the well cap with soil is that if the soil is heavier than the cover can handle, it is likely to collapse, putting you in a situation where you have to spend unplanned money to replace the lid.

And the obvious con of burying your well cover with soil is the contamination of the water source by the contaminants that could be present in the soil.

Never plant trees too close to the cover

Trees, unlike flowers and grasses, have strong and deep penetrating roots and planting them on top or the periphery of the well cap is discouraged. Planting trees will block you from easily accessing the well cover.

Also, as the tree matures, the roots become more robust and penetrate deep, this could not only damage the well cap but also destroy any plumbing works around the area. When the casing is broken down, the soil particle will; contaminate the water source.

Therefore avoid planting trees near the well cover; if you have to plant one, make sure that it is few meters away from the well cap.

Avoid using heavy machinery near the well

When you are working on your yard, always remember not to use heavy equipment near the well. Such a machine produces strong vibrations that may upset the balance of the soil; the resulting event may be the collapse of your well and the cover.

Trimming the grass using a lawnmower is okay since machines are not heavy duty.
